On behalf of ASDA, HGP secured planning approval for a complex retail-led redevelopment scheme in Ware. The scheme, which regenerated a former industrial site and included the refurbishment of historic buildings, delivered a new ASDA food store, a nursery, 14 residential units and linkage enhancements to Ware Town Centre.
The history and former use of the site raised a number of issues but also helped to inform the design — including the need to preserve historic assets such as the exiting kiln and malting structures being incorporated within the store footprint for colleague and warehouse accommodation and informing the vernacular architectural character of the new development.
Working closely with the client and the planning consultant, approval was granted with support from the council members citing regeneration and investment as key benefits of the scheme.
HGP were then appointed to develop the scheme through to completion under challenging budgetary and programme constraints, leading the design team in a BIM environment and working closely with the Design & Build Contractor and Client alike. The completed store comprises of 28,000ft sales area constructed over a split level car park.
