St Johns College, Portsmouth – Planning Approval

By Josh Kabát-Rigelsford

The team at HGP Architects has recently gained planning approval at committee for the development of the former St John’s College site in Southsea. The application for Southsea Village is comprised of the refurbishment, and in some cases the extension, of 15 existing villa dormitories and school buildings, as well as 6 new blocks, which in total house 212 apartments.

The site’s strong heritage within the local community, and important location within the Owen’s Southsea conservation area, have required a sympathetic approach to its development, while ensuring a viable outcome could be achieved. The layout and massing of the proposed encompass the Thomas Ellis Owens villa like vernacular, materials and brick detailing, and seek to maximise open space, enhancing in particular the setting of the Grade II listed buildings.

Overall, the proposal provides quality homes within a dynamic and exciting environment which will enhance and enrich the area and local community.

Well done to the project team.
