Berlin study trip 2023

By Josh Kabát-Rigelsford

A short week ago we had touched down in Berlin, enjoyed our first German Beer to mark the start of our 5th major Study Trip, and were off to see and hear about the architectural sights the city has to offer.

Berlin packs a punch when it comes to ‘Starchitects’ such as Chipperfield, Eisenman, Foster, Gehry, Koolhaus, Liebskind, Pei, Piano, Rogers, Rossi, Van Der Rohe, peppering the city with architectural gems.

With a history that transcends the city and country itself, Berlin courageously acknowledges its past reverently in built form and psyche, whilst also offering resilience and optimisim in the presence of crisp forward thinking, engaging architecture. In addition to a moving and captivating organised tour of the Jewish Museum, we were presented with well researched facts for the remainder of each feature building provided by our very own team members.

Highlights included the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Holocaust Memorial, DZ Bank, Jewish Museum, Axel Springer Neubau, Quartier Schutzenstasse, Charlie Living Complex, Topography of Terror, Daimler Chrysler Building, Potsdamer Platz 11 and the Kollhoff Tower, Ottobock Science Center, Das Center, Neue Nationalgalerie, Humbolt Forum, James Simon Gallery, Berliner Fernsehturm, Netherlands Embassy, Urban housing and the German History Museum.

Amongst all the architecture we also managed some well earned downtime enjoying each other’s company and German fare! What a weekend! Auf Wiedersehen!
