Planning approval for 242 new homes in Brighton

By HGP Administrator

HGP Architects have successfully obtained planning approval for 242 new affordable homes in Coldean, Brighton in the first joint venture between The Hyde Group and Brighton and Hove City Council.

The scheme consists of six pavilion buildings set into the landscape next to the South Downs National Park. The buildings range in height form 5 – 7 stories and provide a mix of 1,2 and 3 bed units along with 3 larger accessible units. The scheme is designed to minimise the impact on the chalk grassland, by reducing the number of buildings and creating the smallest footprint area as possible. Each pavilion follows the steep natural contours and uses a simple palette of materials consisting of three brick types to blend into the surrounding.

The proposals integrate buildings and landscape creating generous intersecting green spaces and direct physical and visual links into the wider landscape.

The new development will also provide ecology enhancements increasing native species, restoring and enhancing habitats whilst providing access for social activities, food growing areas, quieter areas for contemplation and safe play-learning spaces.
